As we celebrate National Healthcare Quality Week, it’s essential to recognize the efforts of healthcare professionals committed to improving patient outcomes and healthcare safety. Their dedication is vital to the health and well-being of our communities, and at RLDatix, we are committed to equipping healthcare staff with innovative technological solutions to reduce their administrative burdens and ensure they can deliver the best care possible.
In a recent presentation at Amazon Web Services’ Generative AI Leadership Forum, Vivek Desai, CTO of RLDatix North America, spoke with Randall Hunt, Caylent’s Vice President, about RLDatix’s approach to the development of its artificial intelligence capabilities within its solutions. The approach focused on supporting three key areas: efficiency, accuracy and the opportunity to unlock more time for frontline staff. By prioritizing these areas, RLDatix helps healthcare organizations streamline operations, ensure consistent reporting and enable providers to focus on delivering high-quality patient care.
Enhancing Efficiency in Reporting
One of the most time-consuming tasks in healthcare is reporting adverse events — incidents like falls, burns or complications during surgery. Traditionally, healthcare staff have had to manually fill out lengthy forms, a process that not only takes time but can also result in inconsistent data across hospitals. Through the use of generative AI, we are developing a solution that automatically populates the form, as well as structured data from unstructured text, such as voice notes or narrative descriptions. This will help frontline staff save countless hours by allowing them to enter event reports verbally.
“We are projecting that for a medium-sized hospital, given that they enter about 5,200 events per year, we’re going to be saving them 5 minutes per event,” said Desai. “What that means is that we’re going to be unlocking potentially 433 hours of time back to the front-line staff to deliver better patient outcomes, deliver better patient care, the possibilities are endless.”
Ensuring Accuracy in Healthcare Outcomes
Beyond efficiency, accuracy is paramount. RLDatix’s generative AI tools ensure that the extracted data is more consistent and precise than manual entries, reducing the risk of human error in critical reporting tasks. For example, when frontline staff enter the severity of an event, reporting can differ as individuals may evaluate the seriousness of the incident differently. The AI system, however, lacks this bias and can examine and categorize the severity of events with a higher degree of consistency than humans, aligning with medical definitions and standards.
Additionally, the AI system can call attention to certain details that may be missing from a report, such as the exact location an incident occurred. This level of precision not only enhances reporting accuracy, but also helps supply data that can identify trends in patient safety that might otherwise go unnoticed. If trends indicate that falls consistently occur on the third floor of a hospital at 1:00pm for instance, leadership can now immediately investigate the source of the issues and begin to address them.
Unlocking Opportunities for Better Patient Care
National Healthcare Quality Week also serves as a reminder of the importance of innovation in tackling the ongoing challenges in healthcare. RLDatix is using AI to unlock new opportunities for better patient outcomes by giving time back to those on the frontlines. With the capability to seamlessly and quickly report and analyze vast amounts of data and detect trends over time, healthcare organizations can anticipate risks more effectively, address recurring issues and supply their staff with the time and ability to deliver higher-quality care.
“In the United States today, 80% of incidents actually go unreported, so we want to bring up the incident reporting rate by making it easier for the front-line staff,” said Desai. “We’re empowering the human to handle what needs to be handled and leaving AI to handle what it does best.”
At RLDatix, our mission is to ensure that technology empowers, rather than hinders, healthcare professionals. As we look toward the future, we remain committed to advancing AI-driven solutions that improve healthcare quality, patient safety and operational efficiency.
During this week, let us acknowledge the progress we’ve made and prepare for the challenges ahead. Through collaboration and innovation, we can continue to build a safer, more effective healthcare system for all.
